What’s your “desert island” guitar?
I’ve seen this type of question as a conversation starter for favorite records, but I don’t know if I’ve seen it asked about guitar.
If you were stuck on a desert island, what ONE guitar would you want to have with you?
We’re going to make a couple of assumptions here:
- This island is like the island in LOST: there is power available. So if your guitar happens to be an electric one, no worries. You can plug it in to the Dharma-issued amplifier
- There is an abundance of wood and there is a radio on the island: you don’t have to burn the guitar for firewood and you don’t have to act like the Professor on Gilligan’s Island and use your guitar to escape. Gilligan would eventually foil your plan anyway…
- It doesn’t have to be a guitar you currently own. If there’s something you’ve been eyeing in the Carvin catalog or that Ethan Luck from Demon Hunter has played, by all means!

My answer? I’m thinking versatility. I want one guitar that will be able to do a number of different things. So I’m going to go with my PRS Hollowbody. It’s got humbucking pickups on it that can do a surprising number of things, so I can impress the natives with my rock prowess. It can do heavier stuff, it can do Gilmour-esque solos, or it can do the twangy Southern stuff. I know because I do it all every show… And it’s got a piezo pickup built right in so I can show the island king a couple of strumming techniques from my “absolute beginner” series. In concert it holds its own for both delicate picking and heavier rock strumming. And the pickup really sounds like an acoustic, so I won’t mind that I didn’t bring my acoustic on the island. This guitar can do pretty much anything, so I’d be ruling that little island in a matter of days!
What about you? What would your “desert island” guitar be?
