Let me be the first to say that your new site looks cool. Guitars have always been my favorite part of bands. Some of my heroes that I got to see, Jimmy Page & Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen. Oh and of course you.

Hello Mark! This is a very nice site you have here! You are very good at creating websites! I bacme a fan November 7, 2008 at your concert in Bedford, IN. We have talked on Twitter about me becoming a Wired member. You are my favorite guitarist in the WORLD! Yeah, I know that's a lot to say, but it's true! You are very good! Thank you for all you do!

I'm enjoying your blog I've wanted to learn to play for a long time, and have finally decided to take the first step. My goal was to learn by 30 and I'm rapidly running out of time It's amazing how excited guitarists get when you tell them of your desire to take up the instrument. My guitar-playing friends have really stepped up to the plate as mentors. I look forward to using your blog as a tool to help me along as well.

As you know, I am musically illiterate. Therefore, I don't see me frequenting your site. (You & Jason start talking guitars and I zone completely out.) That being said, I wanted to tell you your site looks great! Good layout, great style. I hope it becomes a thriving online community. Good luck!

I've always wanted to learn guitar. Is 43 too old? If not, should I start with acoustic or electric?

Thanks, Traci! As I've been putting this site together, I kind of figured some of the "regulars" at my old blog might not be down with it.

I'm gonna keep the posterous site going as my personal blog. I gotta have somewhere to talk about books, right?

I think starting with either acoustic or electric would be a valid choice. I think the real question is what do you see yourself playing? If you're wanting to strum and sing, go acoustic. If you desire to let out your inner Ace Frehley, electric is the call

My parents bought me a Fender Strat a couple of years ago for Christmas and in two years time I've learned about five chords. I really want to learn, but apparently not too awfully bad. It's like I pick it up and play around for a few days, then put it back in the corner due to frustration.

43 better not be too old!? I started taking lessons when I was just over 41. It was something I knew I just wanted to do. I've learned quite a few chords and am fairly satisfied with what I can do but there is always room for improvement….and lots of it, I'm sure. I play acoustic and love strumming, dislike picking. I don't play in church so it is mostly for my own enjoyment and relaxation. Another motivation is I wanted to learn to play some Third Day songs but I haven't gotten quite that advanced yet. I'm a mom of 4 kids ages 18-8 so I don't always have the time. But thanks for this very cool web-site Mark; I look forward to hearing what you have to say here.

So, guitars interest me. My brother plays the guitar. He's not as good as you, Mark! But, he still can. I want him to teach me how to play. I've always wanted an acoustic. Ever since I was about 7. And, now I'm 14 and every now and then I sneak my brothers out of the case. Except, now I can't do that because he is a freshman in college. So, it's with him. Yeah, I commented this when I wasn't signed up. Mark, you are amazing at making websites! Great job!

I am really looking forward to seeing how this site progresses.

Although, I am known for bizarre observations, I do have a serious question about learning guitar. How do I know if I am left or right handed?

I golf left, write right, baseball left, tennis right and the list goes on.. Yeah I know it's strange, but is there someway of telling which would be the preferred? I usually base it on which feels least awkward but is there any sort of exercise that you know of that I could try?

Hey, Mark. Are you planning on posting links to resources? There are some great videos on CCLI TV including some lessons from Paul Baloche and John Standefer which cover some of the basic tricks (like the "locked ring finger" technique for playing in G, or playing "open" in E).

Regardless, I look forward to seeing what you have to add. Being a drummer learning guitar myself I'll readily use any resource available to help learn! Thanks for taking on this ambitious undertaking!

Of course you know you're asking this of a leftie who plays guitar rightie…

I know you asked Mark but I would suggest trying right, and only going left if right feels really awkward. Just seems like a practical way to approach it with the relative availability/price of leftie and rightie guitars. My worship leader is a leftie who plays rightie guitars upside down…but keyboards are his primary instrument.

Unless you are EXTREMELY left handed, when it comes to guitar, be right handed. Left handed instruments are painfully hard to find, and in many cases guitar manufacturers either don't even make left handed versions. Often if a company makes a left handed guitar it will be through their custom shop (requiring custom shop kind of money!).

One other thing to think about: you're using both hands to play guitar, so handedness hardly comes into play…

My plan is to get a series of posts aimed at the "absolute beginner" to sort of lay out my philosophy to learning the guitar. Once I've done that I will probably have more posts that offer "tips and tricks". I might include some links, so long as it's not to copyrighted material…

ello, i am a gear junky sooooo, i really appreciate seein peoples rigs! what do you think about the FULLS, i have been playin around with some TUBE DRIVES, oh and do you play Dr. Z's? i have not had the opportunity to play one yet but from what i know of them they are pretty fantastic, i play an orange and an AC-15, do you know anything about BAD CAT? well, it would be great to hear back from you!

Hey Mark, great site, I have always enjoyed your blogs and am glad to see you start one about guitaring! I would like to know if you use stock pickups in your guitars, or do you swap any of them out for different sounds?

I used to switch out the pickups on my Epiphones.

Since I've been playing PRS guitars, I pretty much use their stock pickups. Two exceptions: the SE ONE (I put in some Fralin pickups that aren't as noisy) and the Singlecut (I'm using some Seymour Duncan pickups on the advice of a producer friend).

I was playing G400's which came with stock Epiphone humbuckers. I put classic '57's in them.

I did keep the stock pickups in my Korina G400 - they weren't as hot as the '57's but still very usable…

hey mark, this sight is fantastic! keep it up, its really good to see what all goes into your playing, and what gear you play. are you happy with the control switch board that you use vs. stomp boxs in front of you, or is it just smoother that way? i am looking into a more convenient rig.
