Mike Huckabee: Bass Guitar Hero

By Mark Lee

The “Guitar Heroes” series of this blog is going to spotlight guitar players - some known, some unknown - who have positively impacted the way we look at the guitar.  For the first installment, I’m featuring someone you probably know, but don’t know of him as a bass guitarist.  Besides being Governor of Arkansas and a presidential candidate in 2008, Mike Huckabee is one mean bass player. David Carr and I had the chance to meet Mike when our tour crossed paths with his last fall.  Mike was warm and gracious, and all he wanted to talk about was music!  Great guy…

Christian Musician Magazine recently did a great article about Mike.  Here’s an excerpt:

As a politician do you feel more or less empowered when you have your bass in your hands?

Far more empowered, it’s therapeutic and relaxing.  It’s also a way to express something that’s a little unusual or out of the ordinary.  I think people tend to think of politicians as stiff, programmed, and orchestrated in everything. When I strap on a bass and cut loose with a local band it’s an uninhibited form of expression.  Not only do I enjoy it, but I think a lot of people appreciate it and see a side of me that they wouldn’t normally see.  It makes me a real person to them and not just a character or figure that they have seen on television.
