Links for Friday 2/13
In case you missed it, Orianthi was the female guitarist who tore it up during Carrie Underwood’s Grammy set. You owe it to yourself to check out her Myspace page. Be sure to listen to her duet with Steve Vai!
A couple of you have asked about some alternate chord forms or chord inversions to shake up your playing. Here’s a great blog post about the topic that explains chord inversions as good as anyone. Also check out chordinversion.com. It looks like it could be a great resource.
Finally, as I’ve been compiling these links the last few weeks, a few sites keep resurfacing that seem to be great online guitar resources. So, to shake things up, this week I’m going to list 5 that you need to check out:
Guitarkadia: I first discovered Guitarkadia via Twitter. My favorite blogs happen when the author’s personality really shines through, regardless of the topic. Definitely the case here. He posts a lot of great videos, including the “Non Guitar Dosage” of cool musical stuff that doesn’t necessary involve the guitar.
Fretbase: in addition to a great blog offering news, product reviews, etc., Fretbase has an innovative project going on. They’re compiling a huge database of artists and gear. Click on an artist and it shows what gear they (theoretically) play. It’s not perfect: the Third Day entry is close but a little off, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to edit it. It’s a great concept, though, and will be really cool if it takes off!
Guitar Today: Features “daily guitar tips, tricks and advice”. While it does that, and does it quite well, what really set Guitar Today apart from the pack are the seemingly infinite cool links they come up with.
Guitar Toybox: Touted as “one guitarist’s point of view”. If this is literally maintained by one guy, color me impressed! The “toybox” is stuffed to the gills with reviews, commentary, videos, links, you name it.
Amplifi3r: Part of the Loud3r network, Amplifi3r is essentially a news feed taken from several different sources. It’s a great way to keep up with a BUNCH of guitar news at once.
Guitars.alltop.com: leave it to marketer/entrepreneur/venture capitalist extraordinaire Guy Kawasaki to be the guy to come up with the coolest site on this list. Why is it the coolest? Because it contains feeds from most of these sites plus about 25 others. Sure you could create a page like this through iGoogle of Flakes or the like, but the truth is, nobody does. Combine that with the fact that “guitars” are but one of a boatload of topics covered, and they’ve got a hit on their hands.
