Thanks so much Dan! and I do have to agree that it is not the two stick lounge :-) I didn't mean to get off topic..it's just what happens when you want to really support you wife :-)

Maybe Mark could chime in on the $$ donation thing..maybe even get permission form David Carr to allow you to do a couple transcriptions...I can wait

Much appreciated.. and off line we go :-)

I understand where her teach is coming from. Need to learn to play structured before playing "free." Perhaps if we each offered to throw a couple $$ at the American Lung Association (or Habitat For Humanity, or the One campaign) we could get "official permission" for me to attempt to transcribe a couple of 3D tunes for you. I wouldn't charge you for it, in return you don't expect it to be done tomorrow (or for it to be exact). ;-)

Beyond the public plea for permission, I'm taking the rest of this discussion to e-mail. After all, this is six string lounge, not two stick lounge. ;-)

@Dan ...I really appreciate your comments! back in the day, I too used to be in a blue band as a rhythm player (My lead work, not so good) and your right about drummers improvising. I'm not sure our drummer ever played the same thing twice.
My wife has only been playing for 2 years and her teacher is hard on her forcing her to learn to read. I think it's a great skill to have, but I think it can also be a hinderence sometimes. I've been trying to get her to just jam with me, but I always get a ton of push back because there is no music. And maybe that's also because she still a very young player.

Anyway you made mention of worship drum video's..could you give me some more info and even a recommendation of whats good..if you need you could contact me off line dholzemer [at] gmail dot com. I would love to get her some additional resources that would make her feel a little more comfortable playing worship (drum) music...that's why she started in the first place and I'd be happy to try to get her materials that might help her along in what she feels that she has been called into.

many thanks!

Great post Mark. I had started a(nother) blathering comment explaining what I knew of the legal issues (I work in IP and have followed the TAB issues since OLGA was around), but it does boil down to "gray areas" including the definition of the term "fair use." I also had a long inane rant in here about how Christian songbooks are frequently not so "guitar friendly," but that boils down to who the target audience is for the books.

Funny, I had just whittled down similar comments above. I'd add that songbooks do tend to skew towards "adapting songs to piano and putting standard guitar chords above." You're right in that "drum songbooks" are hard to find. I'm actually a drummer since 5th grade, and I know there aren't many books out there. I think there are several factors involved:
--Not a lot of complex drumming out there. I did pick up the Neil Peart (Rush) book that came out. I also picked up a Hendrix book that was the "complete" "Are You Experienced?" with guitar bass and drum parts. The parts generally tend to be easier to figure out just by listening.
--Precision isn't as much the key to drumming. If you hit a different tom than the recorded version, it's not going to stand out like playing the same fret on the wrong string on a guitar.
--In fact drummers, of all members, do tend to "jam/improvise" more than anyone. Ask David to play a song the exact same way he did on the recording and he'd probably have to work at it. I know after years of being in a blues band I have trouble playing concert band drumset music "as written" (of course most of it is written poorly anyway...).
--There's probably an issue with the market size as well (how many drummers can read drum music and are willing to buy it?).
--More prevalent are drum videos that are put out by drummers kind of showing their style in a workshop format. You won't pick up the ability to play a particular song but you'll know how he/she does certain patterns/fills. I'm guessing David (Carr) doesn't have such a video, but he keeps things relatively simple. He's not a flashy player, but a great pocket drummer that complements the band's sound well with his playing.
Bottom line: she shouldn't worry about playing exact from the album but focus on achieving the same feel. I'm sure that doesn't help dramatically but that's all I can offer.

Hey Mark,
This really is a great post and you make some good arguments. For the most part I do agree, but I'd have to throw out a couple of follow up questions.
First I do believe in buying the sheet music to help support "the band" but then at the same time I have purchased stuff from the publishers just to find out it was wrong. So what should consumers do about that? Sometimes to me as a consumer it feels like a no win situation. You do know it right to buy the sheet music. They have worked long and hard on their songs and deserve the credit and payment. But at the same time sometimes the publisher just doesn't provide the right stuff.

And the other question from my wife...she's a drummer..she's totally into David Carr but always makes the comment, where's the drum music? If you look around the net there is hardly any drum music available to purchase...and yes drummers actually read music and there is actually drum music :-)
Even the book produced via Third Day..It's usually just Guitar & Piano. I know this is a guitar blog but whats a drummer to do?

Not trying to start a war here, rather their just my 2cents after I read your post.

great post Mark .you know if a person wants a truly accurate tab of a song they are gonna have to buy it legally .but i look on some guitar sites just as a quick reference then take what i see on there and what i pick off by ear and go with that .alot of times playing in praise bands , when i go somewhere else they generally have the song lyrics with basic chords over the top .the real magic lies in knowing what to really play based on the chords and the key of the song.and hopefully knowing what the original artist played on the song .copyrights should not be violated .But a lot of players would greatly benefit from developing their ear it will greatly help them not only be a better guitarist but a better musician .alot of times the videos on you tube or elsewhere expose peolple to other players or artist music .they are a great advertisement and in my case led me to purchase music from bands i otherwise would not have known about .so it is kind of a give and take situation for the so called "free" internet .

Thanks, Mark. This cleared up a lot of confusion.

Just to let you know, I'm learning "Keep On Shinin'" on my guitar from the sheet music BOOK which I PURCHASED. (Great song, by the way.)

I'd also like to add that a lot of these tab sites dumb down complex songs into G-C-D-Em chords. Of course, that has to do with the people who post them. I do occasionally get tabs from these sites (especially when the artist hasn't released a book of sheet music), but the chords and lyrics generally are off.
