This is one of the best guitar blog post I've read in a long time! Thanks Mark!!! I've been playing for over 11 years have have a tone of gear and have been using a G-System by TC electronics. I've been wanting a compression pedal but have never owned one. I'm gonna check out the Visual Sound Comp 66. Thanks again!!

hello mark
where would you recommend to put the volume pedal? i'd like to put it next to my wah just for convenience sake. but some people say to put it after the overdrive. what are your thoughts?

hey mark, new to your site. it's awesome, i'm looking forward to all that's to come. is/was your CS-3 modded? i have a monte allums opto-mod CS-3 and it has made a world of difference! completely silent and way more easily tweakable.
i was wondering what your thoughts were in terms of placement of a volume pedal for volume swells on a more "working man's" pedalboard (like your "fly" setup). where have you found that to be best?

Great post, Mark!

Anyone has an opinion on Pete Cornish's method of eliminating level inconsistencies, noise, from you pedalboard - interview found in May 2008 Guitar player? He has some tips there I am not completely convinced of.

Also take in consideration your Volume Pedal (if you have one included). It should be added right after any modulation pedals (Chorus, Tremolo, flanger, etc.) you might have and right before your reverb or delay (the end of chain).
In that position, the Volume Pedal will leave the guitar signal level untouched entering any sorts of overdrives, etc.
Also it will leave the delay or reverb pedal have their "last say" after the turn the Volume Pedal off.

But - in the end - tone is so subjective. We can write down all the rules, technical aspects, etc., then you go over to Johnny Greenwood's (RadioHead) rig, and all those rules are out the window. But just listen to his tones!

This is fun, Mark! Keep it coming!

Can you remember that last gig before you bought a pedal board ? I recall my right foot going for distortion ( digitech GRUNGE ) and suddenly i was snarred in this massive tangle of 9vlt powersupply wires. Did I mention the mic stand being just out of reach , and our drummer laughing so loud that it didn't really matter that suddenly the song lost it's vocal track... It was like an "I love Lucy " moment... ANy how , i run a rack comp. (dbx ) then into pedals:chorus->dist->delay->amp...TC

I got this Line 6 M13 thing and I'm trying out things I wouldn't normally on it. I'll have to throw in a compressor into the mix and see how I like it there.

I have never really liked using them/knew really what I was doing before.

all this talk is making want to break out my compressor .it just sits on a shelf collecting dust .i used it when i did more country style playing .i use a fender twin reverb amp with two of the power tubes pulled out so it compresses on its own. but might have to try and break it out .

Makes total sense! I"m assuming you have a "mix" option on your effects loop, and that you're able to dial in the effects level.

That's cool you're using the wah through the effects loop. Like I said - it's all about what works for you!

I have a love/hate relationship with compressor pedals. When everything's working great tehy are awesome. They can help add that extra warmth and sizzle to your tone and make your guitar behave in the mix like it's supposed to.

When everything's NOT going OK, compressor pedals can be a nightmare. They can make your rig noisy. It's not always the pedal's fault - because of what they do to your signal, sometimes they will make existing noise even louder.

Have I tried different compression pedals? That would be an understatement! I used an MXR Dyna Comp for a long time, then a Keeley. Both of those pedals were cool, but both tended to be noisy. At the time I took the rig photos below, I was using the Boss because it was the least noisy compressor I could find.

Right now, I'm using the Visual Sound Comp 66. Very little noise, and the about the warmest sounding compressor I've ever played!
